Legends were scattered far and wide over the week-end; although there has been no further word from the girls in Hungary - which could mean they're back in jail.Jonny Hooper took on the Beast of the East in Kilkenny finishing 17th in 2:29:20. Perhaps even tougher was the latest in the Decathlon Series, the Top of the Mournes Olympic Triathlon at Rostrevor which featured an interesting descent off Spelga. All I know is that Kieran McVeigh got down safely to post a time in and around 3 hours. Earlier in the week there had been a good turn-out at the Portaferry 10-miler with age-group wins for Greg McClure,Ed Smith,Francis Boal and Maureen Oliver. July 20 - Portaferry:26th Greg McClure 1:05:04.66th Ed Smith 1:11:47.73rd Paul Brown 1:12:22.77th Francis Boal 1:13:09.83rd Alfie Day 1:14:12.88th Joey Miles 1:14:50. 119th Maureen Oliver 1:19:14.

A further update on the Ukraine situation.Apparently they weren't heading for the Ukraine but Hungary. And, it was for the European Champs not the Worlds. Anyway it all turned into a Hungarian Goulash as Ruth Magill and Finn McCourt were pulled out of the 5,000metres a lap early- and then not allowed to finish robbing them of any chance of medals."The whole thing was a complete disaster," says Ruth.Mary Macken was allowed to finish and she came 5th in 22:43 in a race run in 37 degrees of heat.

From a garbled message coming out of Eastern Europe, Finn McCourt and Ruth Magill have not had the best of build-ups to today's(Tues) World Masters Athletics Championships in the Ukraine. Apparently, en route, they spent a night in jail for speeding!Let's hope they go as quick on the track today. Well done to the Omagh and QUB triathletes who are now Ironmen and Ironwomen following Sunday's Challenge Roth. They were led home in just over 11 hours by John McManus despite carrying an achilles tendon injury into the race. July 18 Roth Challenge:Men - 1,300th John McManus 11:20:36.1510th Sean Bradley 11:38:15. 1535th Marty Lennon 11:40:11.1581st Damian Eannetta 11:44:15.1886th Conor Eannetta 12:20:30.1989th Niall Magee 12:37:06. Finally, despite being on holiday, Shileen O'Kane managed to take in the Coleraine 10K at the week-end.She wasn't too happy with her time, but still picked up an age-group prize. July 17 Coleraine 10K - 55th Shileen O'Kane 42:18.70th Francis Boal 44:10.

On the medical front - David Matthews got out of hospital today following his quad heart by-pass.That's a sign of how well he's doing - because he only had the surgery last Wednesday. And, Ciaran Cahill is due out of hospital following his car accident this week-end. Ciaran has been in hospital for some 10 weeks and faces a lot of rehab before he can return to work, hopefully around Xmas time.

Yes. Athlone was the triathlon gig of the year to be at in Ireland at the week-end with the world champion Alistair Brownlee imperious as he hurtled through the town's narrow streets being cheered to the echo by the crowds packed like sardines on the pavements. Well done to all who represented Ireland in the Sprint and Olympic age-groups - though the Olympic competitors comfortably got the worst of the weather with driving wind and rain and a 7.30am start. In the Open events - Philip Boyd in winning his age group had a secret weapon - a pair of borrowed Quest carbon rim wheels. July 3/4 TriAthlone European Championships. By all accounts it was a great weekend in Athlone and a fabulously well organised event - brilliant to have the elite men and women come to Ireland. In the Open sprint event Emma Bamford came 2nd in her age group with a fabulous time and Anne Hannan also came 2nd in her age group. Phillip Boyd was 1st in his age group in Olympic distance and Heather Bamford was racing for Ireland in the European age group against a very strong field and ended up 10th in Europe. Not sure who else was racing and apologies if I missed you but a lot of results to pour through.

Ruth Magill is the Northern Ireland Masters Track Champion. Ruth, currently in the form of her life, won gold at the Mary P. track on Sunday in the 3000m with a winning time of 11:09:19.Fancying herself as a bit of a sprinter, she also couldn't resist entering the 200m - where she took silver in 31.39 secs. And,Barry Rankin may have been flying(see home pic) but Anne Sandford took Legends' pride of place on Saturday at the Slieve Donard fell race where she finished as third woman overall. Slieve Donard Results,June 26: 45th Anne Sandford 1:15:19.65th Barry Rankin 1:22:40. 88th Ricky Cowan 1:30:43.91st Richard Dugan 1:31:49.95th Brian Spence 1:33:06. At the Irish Waterways Sprint triathlon in the Fermanagh lakeland on Sunday - Desi McHenry climbed some 40 places during the 20K cycle into eighth spot - but was forced back down the field by that debilitating knee injury on the run section. There were several Legends taking part in the 200 mile Belfast-Dublin-Belfast Maracycle at the week-end - one of them, Maeve Cahill, featured in last night's Belfast Telegraph. Willie Noteman took the train home from Dublin - but he had planned to do so -honest. Finally, good luck to David Matthews who goes into hospital today for by-pass heart surgery. He's already entered for next year's London marathon - so that's a good sign.
